Big Four Ice Caves

Monday, September 15, 2014

On a whim, the mister and I headed towards Mount Baker area this past Saturday.  We drove for an hour before needing a little nosh.  We stopped in the quaint town of Granite Falls where we discovered the Big Four Ice Caves trail.

I was surprised to find such an adventure on a paved and family friendly trail, but the views were quite breath taking.  However, it was a bit perplexing...I mean ice in Summer? Needless to say, my shorts were not appropriate attire for exploring the frigid landscape.

It is an easy hike; only 2 miles round trip.  Most of the trail is paved; however, as you get closer to the caves the path converges into gravel.  It is a very well maintained trail, so you can leave your hiking boots at home.

There is another cave further up the trail that features a waterfall that we weren't able to see this trip.  So, we will definitely return before October, when the caves dissappear under heaving mounds of ice and snow.

If you live near Seattle, you should check this place out!  It is just an hour or so outside the city near the town of Granite Falls.
